LOL! I find it sacreligous to attempt making a Sportster into a poor-performing Rice Burner, but to each his own I guess. I think the XL1200R is a much classier, and classic, looking bike with the dual "shorties", and I believe it to be one of the best all-around cruisers on the road. Two upswept exhaust pipes and mufflers, and wheelies, just don't float my boat.
I never really understood all the "cruiser" talk when talking about the sportster. Just because you can slap some forwards, or make other not-so-beneficial ergonomic chnages on it doesn't make it a cruiser. Harley's cruisers are mostly the 'Dynas and some of the Soft tails. The Sportster is a sport-standard. More along the lines of the Ducati Classics, the sport Bonnevilles and the original line of Honda CBs, and more modern entrants like, say, the SVs, the Nighthawks or the *gasp* KZs. Argue chicken/egg all you want, just because the Sportster was out before most of those bikes doesn't mean it defines the genre.
i like my 06 XL1200L very much, thats why i bought a harley, the sportys are heavy and the others are obese IMHO,i would think for a minimal $$ the moco could improve the SUSPENSION + BRAKES on all models, even though most harley guys say brakes are fine if they rode a bike with REAL brakes and suspension they might have a new outlook, if you need to stop quickly CHROME wont help, but since harleys are selling well WHY BOTHER is the mocos way, BRAKES AND SUSPENSION MAKES A SAFER MOTORCYCLE, oh i like the XR with a few cosmetic changes for function
I can understand why they didn't want to sell it here first. Us American's that buy Harleys usally don't buy sport bikes note the sales of the old XR1000's and the XLCR's. Too bad it will have bad sales numbers here and will vanish from the USA. If I was younger and still into riding sportbikes I would be hot for it but the exhaust system would have to go. My 2 cents
Like the XR or not, the fact that Harley-****ing-Davidson, the company that sells AMERICAN TRADITION like it's a tangible product, would *NOT* sell *ANY* model here (and here, FIRST) is a kick square in the nuts. Especially to the guys who swear up and down that the only reason they have a Harley is because they're the only viable domestic manufacturer. If I were more in love with my principles, I'd sell my Harleys and write a "strongly worded letter" to the powers that be. Of course, I'm more realistic and practical about life and just find it amusing more than anything.
Fact is, Harley buyers (as a culture, not individually) tend to shun anything that steps outside their narrow, poorly-constrained little-box-view of the biking world. Which is a true shame.
I'm pretty sure they don't even manufacture that XR1200 in the states, how's that for a kick in the nuts?!
it is was it is. more or less a flat tracker. i let several xr750s slip away on ebay and they sold in upwards of 15 grand. dont need a tourer yet. if you compare the 1200 pics to the original xr750 you will see that the bike isnt trying to be anything other than what it originally was. im sure the moco knows it wouldnt sell here too well but i think each dealer could sell 2 or 3 no problem.
Thats a great looking bike!! Cafe Racer Bike areso cool. Remember the XLCR 1000? I like that one too. But it didn't do to well then, and I don'tthink Harley wants a repeat of that again here. I wonder if that variable length intake, front & rear suspensionwill be available to buy. I have a 883R and would consider replacing it with this. I hope they make it availble in the U.S.
