I had a Shadow as my first non crotch rocket bike back in 2001. I got the Hondaline windshield to go with it, which was rather large, never had any problem with buffeting, then I bought a 2003Suzuki Volusia with a Memphis Shades windshield, also very large and had nothing but buffeting issues with it! For my 2003 sportster I tried a 14" Windvest and I can now say that I will buy another Windvest for whatever I ride in the future! They're a little pricy, but well worth it!
I'm not a fan of windshields. My dad had a windshield on his sportster and I didn't think it made much of a difference for the cold. As for riding fatigue on the trips I've done I never have had a problem and I think there isn't enough beneifits for the looks of them.
Dress for the cold and shield doesn't matter much.
I run a quick release during the colder months and haven't had any problems from the wind and we can get some pretty serious stuff coming straight off the ocean or down from the hills.
Have one, like it a lot. My riding is primarily hiway and it makes a huge difference. For weekend recreational riding, off it comes. (HD quick release)
my friends call em sissy shields.i think they look sportier without one on,but i gotta have one,my eyes water up so bad without one.i guess i could wear goggles but then i`d feel like a dork like from the movie "every which way but loose"
I have one on mine...I don't get the crap in my eyes and stuff...and so my eyes don't tear up as much...And for some reasons without one I can't breath as well..wind takes my breath away...my lungs aren't that good..guess that is why...never used to be that way...guess I am getting old!!. Mine is an H-D Sport...and it is detatchable...I wouldn't run with out it...
But the buffeting was terrible, and the bike actually felt unstable to me at 70+ mph in high winds.
So I switched to this:
It flows quite a bit more air, but all that air is nice and clean with no buffeting, and really increased the distance I could ride my bike in a single day without overwhelming fatigue.
I have the HD quick detach compact and it is has transformed the riding experience it is more comfortable, warmer, quicker and I dont feel that I am going to be dragged off the bike at speed.
