I just finished painting my 883 engine I first started with 500 degree engine paint then finished with black wrinckel paint from harley it looks real good im just wondering if I can spray clear over it to protecetit from scratches thanks
500 degree will not be enough... you will need at least 1200... just to warn you... i have shot several motors both HD and HONDA CB... 500 never held up... for some reason you can shoot the 1200 degree and then clear it with the 500 degree clear without any issues... never understood that... but the 500 never held up for me... i never shot an 883... but i do not think that will make a differance... i know joe garcia shot his bike so maybe he had diff luck, but from what i have had.... 500 does not cut it

holy crap i just actually READ your post.
look, that engine and anything in contact with its surface will reach incredibly hot temperatures... you think the air around it is hot when its warmed up? its nothing compared to the surface temp. 500 degree paint will not hold up.
and then you put wrinkle finish??? is that stuff even high temp??!?!? if its not your trapping more heat INSIDE the motor. it needs to get OUT, flat black 1200+ paint HELPS cooling more than bare metal, thats why big twins are painted with it.
you should scrape it all off and start over with the right stuff
if u dont feel like it, at least youll have a reason to buy new heads for that 1200 upgrade hahaha, just treat THOSE right
Wagon50, ya gotta change "IMG to image" when posting a pic. Oh yeah and make sure you keep the / in the second [/IMG] or the pic won't showeither.
Here's your sig pic.You should downsize it to a much smaller size for a siggy pic.
Also when painting an air cooled engine, it's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to High temp resistance. The higher the temp the better.
I wouldn't bother with clearcoat.
Wrinkle black is high temp but I have never had lasting results with it.The temp rating on standard wrinkle is 300*-500*.The 500* engine paint is designed for water cooled car motors and probably won't last very long either.I too have shot a few motors and the best paint I've used so far is Ace Hardware brand high heat. It's great stuff and I've had excellent results.I like it 'cause it comes in a gloss black and whan it cures it turns to more of a satin black. It also cures hard as a rock and I've had the best resultswith this paint. You'll get good results withjust about any 1200* BBQ or Stove paint.Never use primer with these paints
