Default New Grips?

Has anybody had problems putting new grips on their bike? I have a buddy at work that said he had to sand down his bars with emory cloth for about 2 hours before the throttle grip would go on his 04 road king. I've got an 03 sporty custom 1200. I was thinking of putting my new grips on this weekend (the guy at the dealership said it's about an hour project) but I don't have a few hours to sand the bars down. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the article, I'll make sure I follow it step by step. I was going to go just buy a torx set and thankfully that mentions to buy a size 27. Are there any other sizes I should get for any other items I might change down the road (derby cover, etc)?

jlsporty,

I agree with TCSTD. I changed out my stock grips for Kuryakyn's ISO grips with the throttle boss and it probably took me all of 30 minutes (I'm slow). I had no need to sand down the bar on the left (clutch side) after cutting off the OEM grip, and the throttle side was a breeze. Just take your time with the throttle side so you don't lose those little ferrules for the cables.

Thumper's right, take your time and do it right. It'll be about a 45 minute job. As with any mod, it isn't complete until you back up to admire your work to the sound of a beer cracking open.

Didn't get to it this weekend, but hopefully I will soon. As soon as it's done I'll snap some pics. Thanks for all the advice!

Like Thumper stated, Take your Time and you won't have a problem. I changed the grips on my 04 1200 C to the Kuryakyn ISO grips. Took all of 30 to 45 minutes. I have since installed the throttle boss and man that makes a world of difference.

I plan on installing the dwg mini apes that I picked up last month as soon as we get a rainy weekend.

Good Luck with the swap.
