Default surface rust

I've been riding my bike off and on over the winter here in Ohio and just had it out today. When I got home I noticed some surface rust on my foot peg brackets and on the shift linkage. Any one no if this can be polished off and if so whats the best polish to use?

WD-40 and ultra-fine steel wool will do wonders on surface rust. Not to mention if your working around areas with joints or sharp corners that you cant reach into, it won't dry up leaving white crap like polishes will.
