Default Saddle Bags support installation

What's the best way to install saddle bag supports? I have supports that require one part to be screwed on to the top shock bolt. My manual says that if I want to change my shocks I have to take out the lower shock bolt off and then the top, but for the saddle bags support I only need to remove the top shock bolt. What will happen if I remove just the top shock bolt? Can I do so without putting the bike on a lift?
thank you for the help

Pull the top shock bolt out, attach your support, then put the bolt back in. Don't be surprised if you need a longer bolt. Perhaps your kit came with longer bolts. An extra set of hands would help. When I attempted to install saddlebag supports on my bike I needed an extra set of hands to get the shock bolt back in. Turns out I couldn't use the HD supports anyway because I have detachable sissy bar mounts.

If its the same as the one I had the second bolt in the support, the one towards the back of the bike, is the more difficult one. I could not get it into position without taking off both shocks and dropping the rear wheel an inch or so. If you do have to do this then a lift would be really useful.
