I dug into my old aviation books to get an idea how the Federal Air Regs describe the use of the tape..............they claim that it will cool the pipes, as the tape actually works as a heat sink of sorts to wick off the heat, thus augmenting the flow of exhaust...I am looking for the section on installing it, but no luck yet...............BINNY
I've been wrapping my pipes for years.Water isn't an issue. When you ride in the rain your pipes will stay dry anyway whether they're wrapped or notand when you wash the bike just run it around the block and they'll dry immediately. What will happen is over time it will affect the look of the pipe underneath.WhatI mean is,if you wrap a shinney newchrome set of pipes and a year later you don't like the wrap anymore the chrome underneath can bear an imprint of the wrap, like the weave or the overlapping and you can't always get it off.
Also ,they don'tHAVE to becoated. The coating(it's high temppaint)will help to preserve the wrap a little longer .You can also use it to touch them up when they fade(they'll always fade) but it's not necessary.I run mine without coatinguntil they are frayed and filthy and starting to fall apart and then I'll just do 'em again. If you want them to look pretty the paint will help but they'll always look worn after some time.
wrap is for racing if you wrap them they will burn out quickly then you be back b--- that HD pipes wear out to fast. We have seen this thead 100 times why did my cheap wrapped pipes burn out.
Usless someone is paying you to race leave the wrap off or go ahead and order a new set of pipes so you have them on hand.
Some stuff is ment for the track

I've never had a set of pipes "burn out" because of header wrap.I've been using this stuff for years. The chrome won't look pretty after a while(I paint them anyway)but the pipes will be fine.

Maybe they were just cheap pipes to begin with...I just re-wrapped mine...pipes weren't damaged in any way shape or form with over 12K on em since I first did it...and I ride every day, pretty hard as well.
And how exactly do chromed steel pipes burn out because of heat wrap and street riding? That's a new concept to me considering they're MEANT to transfer heat and exhaust from the motor...and if people are bitching to HD...maybe it's because they don't know jack **** and they run their motor too hot and push it too hard without a proper tune. Most people that listen to the stealer don't know how to do any damn thing on a bike, anyways.
And to get the full effect, you really do need to coat them...they don't do their job as well without it.
Yeah, you can run em without it, but I guarantee you'll be happier with the coating on there.
did you even read the link you posted? the only "damage" it spoke of was a figureative 30 year amout of degredation as opposed to 50 years? WTF? if my pipes last that long ill be stoked...doubtful ill even have the same bike in 30 years much less the same pipes...
