I've got an 03 custom that I'm interested in putting some apes on. I was thinking about adding some stock Wide Glide bars. Would I have to change the stock riser to do this? Does anybody have pics either with apes on the stock riser or with the Dyna bars in general? Below you'll see the most current pic I have here at work so you know what I'm workin with. Thanks in advance...
Your stock risers are not much higher than most of us use with mini-apes. I've got minis on mine with 3" straight risers if you want to check my gallery (they're by khrome werks and pre-dirlled for int. wires, cost $38 and are the OEM repl. for older wideglides, street bobs). I chaged my stock riser becasue it was the ugly tall pullback riser with speedo mount built in (my bike is an 06 1200C).
just think about how wide the bars are at the bottom. On the sportster narrow front end I personall dont like wide bars, it looks out of place. It looks like your stock riser would work, just 1in bars replacing the ones you have. most likely need new cables and extending the wires. I know the search function is a little off lately so here is a pic of my 18in apes to see how wide mine are at the bottom.
Side by side pictures same bike same bars two differant risers. I really like the look of the shorter risers and the bars are low enough this year that it doesn't make your neck burn after a few miles. The bars on this bike are 90's Dyna wide glide bars.
Don't lock yourself in using stock Dyna bars and maybe having to change risers too cause it turns out too tall.
There are tons of bars made in all different heights that can consider.
Sit on bike and place hands in air where you want the bars to end up...have buddy measure up from existing riser and that will tell you how much rise you need using existing risers......if they make a bar to fit, then worry about the width and turnback and pullback....just keep measuring and searching bars till you find them.
Thanks for the advice all. I think I'm going to start searching for bars and risers. Hopefully I get my refund check soon so I can get it all done before riding season is fully here...
