Default Forward Controls Question

My 1988 has a chrome primary cover. I am having a problem with one aspect of switching to forward controls...
When I removed the clutch side footpeg I noticed that on the base of it there is a little locating pin that fits into a hole in the primary cover. Now that I no longer need that peg I have a threaded stud protruding from the cover along with a locating hole. Its easy to finish up the threaded stud. I made a chrome spacer and I capped it off with a chrome acorn nut.
The problem is the little locating hole. What can be done to cover it up so that primary fluid doesn't splatter out of it when the bike is running. I was thinking about a very short screw but it needs to be extremely short because there is something on the other side of the hole.

Also.... I am still having problems with the forward controls clamp that goes onto the threaded shifter shaft. The shaft has 2 sets of knurls with a space inbetween them. I found a screw that fits into the clamp but I can't insert it into the clamp until after the clamp is seated on the shaft. It then seems I have to line up the space between the knurls in the shaft with exactly where the bolt goes through the shaft. It just doesn't look right.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
