My wife has a 2002 883 with Screaming Eagle II exhaust and a K&N air filter. All the work had been done on it when she bought it, so I'm not sure if it has been rejetted or not. Once the bike is warmed up, when she gives it gas to take off, it seems to backfire out the carburator. A quick pop, especially, if she snaps the throttle quick rather than easing into it. We tried to run premium in it to see if that would help and it didn't. Towards the end of last year it started to smell very rich around the air cleaner, so we took it apart and didn't see any obvious leaks. Could this be the same problem or different? Any suggesteions? Can I tell if the carb has been rejetted easily? Thanks for the help.

sounds like you may have an intake leak to me, has it done this since you got it or did it just start. did the gas smell and the backfiring happen about the same time. other than looking at the plugs, there is no way to tell if rejetted without actually looking at the jet sizes. also, an intake leak may look like lean jetting on the plugs, because you would be getting too much air even if the jets are right.

Do the simple an least expensive thing first. If its a 2002 an you ve never changed the tank fuel filter do that first because if its dirty all the tuning in the world wont help. Part no. is 62166-o2 its only about 3 bucks. Just change my yesterday an with only 4000 miles it looked horrible wondered how bike even runned. From now on going to change it every year so if i picked up any bad gas from previous season it will be ready for new season.

my 96 bone stock 883 does that carb farting thing also I thought that there might have been some condisation in the gas from sitting for months before i bought it in 9-05 and herd from coworkers that is normal but i always thought that it could be tuned to eliminate that that from happening with the stage 1 but if not i wont do the stage 1 But like fixerdj says it might be a intake leak i never thoght of that so im going to check mine now
