Most of the Harley's I own have the 'tank fuel gauge' and it is a gas gauge in name only.. They aren't that accurate at all.
What's so difficult about using your trip odometer to determine when it's time to refuel? Set the trip odometer at "0" when you fill up, glance at it from time to time when riding, and when it gets to a certain mileage you know it's time to refuel.
Then repeat the process.
I never reply on my tank mounted fuel gauge to determine when it's time to refuel, and in fact, on the EFI models I don't even trust the 'low fuel light'...
I agree, use the trip odometer. but remember, high speeds or aggressive driving use more fuel. I usaly can go 115 120 miles before fueling. the other day at work I ran over to get lunch at a gas station with a sandwich shop. the trip was at 105 miles the staion was 4 miles away. i should have been able to get there and get lunch and gas. well she started sputtering on freeway about a 1/2 mile from the exit, tried the reserve and nothing, witched back to main. I ran out at the ramp coasted to the pumps, obnly to find out they were shut down due to a vehicle that caught fire. shortly befor I got there. got my lunch but ahd to wait for a co-worker to bring me gas, comments. dont trust your reserve, and get gas before you run out had 109 miles on trip. always was able to go further then that, but i did do alot of high speed runs and off the line racing my freinds with that tankfull. I guess you learn something everyday
Make one...you could use a float that rotates a disc under an epoxy cover...your readings could be "full" and "****ed" hahahahaha! I'm seriously thinking about doing this, by the way...I'm gonna use the old cork float assemby off a ford and install it right below my gas cap, not on it.
I still use the odometer on my bike also even though I have a gas guage and light. The light seems to come on mostly when I have about a gallon and a half left in the tank but not always. The guage seems to be about on a quarter tank left when the light comes on.
