Alternate octane levels with each fill-up. The octane boost is more than the simple average. If the engine is happy, be happy. Otherwise, you can trade for an 883 run 87 octane.
I either run 93 or 91 octane in my 07 1200 Custom. It does not like 87, lets me know right away. yeah the savings between 87 and 93 is minimal. Its gonna cost more in repairs in the long run.
I'm not going to worry about alternating. The cost savings just isn't there. I guess I have gotten into some kind of save every penny in gas I can mode. You know, watching for the station that has gas a couple cents cheaper even though it will only save me 5 cents. I guess it is mentallity you build as a cager putting 20 gallons in a truck. With the Harley, 10 cents difference in gas really isn't worth a thing, heck 20 cent is no big deal.
bought a 08 nightster. rode it so much the first day filled up tank twice with regular gas..didnt read manual. sitting at light a twist the throttle it would give a nasty pinggin noise. took back 2 dealer and drained tank and lines, changed plug. it happened that quick for me. high test from then on
I have this arguement with my wife on a regular basis. There is an exit on the slab just down from us where the travel plazas have price wars on the gas cost. Cars line up 3 and 4 deep at the station that is 2 cents per gallon cheaper. The other usually has 1 car at the 16 pump island. She wants to go wait in the line to save 2 cents. I always point out that in her 17 gallon tank (cage) that works out to about 34 cents... My time is worth more than that.

See that happen all the time. I would rather pay 20 cents more a gallon than to wait in line for 10 minutes. Also....If there is a BP station that is 40 cents less than the station right next to it , I would still definately go to the higher priced one. My bike and cage hate BP gas. Odd. Have had car dealerships tell me BP has caused many a customer problem as well. Anyone else have a problem with them? Curious.
This is what I have always wondered, 1hose, three grades, I select 91 octane, I assume the hose and whatever the hell is below it to the storage tank is 87 as most cars use it, i take 2 or 3 gal to fill up.....how much 91 am I actually getting...Am I the only one that has this wierd thought??????????

I had wondered the same think. Someone who knows math needs to figure it out.
