Default 06 exhaust question...

Hey guys/gals,Newbie here. Please bare with me. First, I would like to say that I am very impressed with this forum. I bought my bike (2006 1200 custom) last year. I love it.My question is this, do I "need" to rejet if I plan to stay with a stock intake, and put on slipons? I have talked to a lot of people and it goes both ways. Some said that if you don't change the intake, you should be ok. But some say that you changed it a little, you should have to checked out and rejeted. I should also let you know that when I brought it in for it's 1000 mile checkup, I had a small issue with it backfiring (coughing) when I would take off from a stop. But not all the time of course. So they said that they changed the main jet to a 45 from a 42. If this is the case, I would almost think that if I just threw on slip ons, that I wouldn't have to have it checked out and I should be ok. If not, what else do I need to worry about?I guess the main reason I haven't done a full stage 1 is because I just don't see a reason for this bike. It's peppy enough for me and I don'tthink it's really worth the extra money they want for just an aircleaner.I just want to change the sound a little and make it so I can at least hear the exhaust while I ride. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I hope to get into a bigger bike when finances are a little better.

I would have it tuned just so your bike is running at its best, it can only help it.

Just for a sake of reference I have a 2006 883 Custom and it has SE II slip-ons and I dont believe it ever had anything done to the jets. (I bought it used.) It seems to be running great. I'm probably running somewhat lean but I don't think I have had a backfire yet.

What you will get out of slip-ons are a better sound and possibly a reduction in back pressure. You will not have to rejet as you are not changing the air/fuel mixture with a less restricted air cleaner. Put your slip-ons on and enjoy the added rumble without any other mods being necessary.

I doubt you even needed the #45 jet. Most likely a simple and small opening of your idle mixture adjustment screw would have done the trick (NOT the idle adjustment screw, unless your idle was too low).

Just to add pipes, there is no need to make any adjustments to the carb. I installed my pipes first, thebike ran fine that way with stock air cleaner and no carb work. After about 5,000 miles I added the Screamin Eagle air cleaner, and did the carb re-jet and tuning.

carb adjustments are not needed if there was no intake change

I have a 2006 sportster 883. I was wondering if i knock out the tabs in the existing mufflers, how does it sound? I was told that the bike will have a tin canning sound. Anyone do this to there bike? Or do i just put on some slip-on? I don't want to spend alot of money. I want the bike to sound alittle louder then it does. Thanks for your input.

Thank you all for your imput. Looks like I just need to find a good set of slipons that I will like. Thumper26,The bike was under warrenty yet and so HD did the work. They brought up all the same fixes as you have but they decided to do the jet size change. I guess I can't complain cause I didn't get charged for it. It did take care of the problem.
