I got my new vance & hines slip ons today. Installed em and WOW, what a difference. When you all said that they where loud, you where not kidding. Now, if it would just warm up a little so I can ride it and see if I need to rejet em or not it would be great. What would a good sign that it was running lean or rich? It seems to run ok, but I haven't really put it under a good load yet. I only got to ride it up and down the street a couple times. It did pop on an engine brake slowdown. But only once. It hasn't hickuped at all when I go to take off. (roll into the throtle) It's only been in the high 30's here and they are talking more snow tomorrow. So it's going to be a good couple weeks before I get to ride it on the road to see what it does. And it could just be cold? I just don't want to f something up. I do plan to put a se air cleaner kit on and then have it checked out, but I got about 400 more miles and at least two more paychecks before I can pay for the air cleaner kit.
Thanks Biker Trash. I couldn't remember what color the plugs are sposed to be. It's been a while since I took automotive school in High school. I will make sure I check them. And yes, I do plan to change out the air cleaner, I will make sure it gets checked out when I install it. Anyone know what it costs to have the dealer do it? OR is this something I can do myself? Rejeting that is. I know they changed the pilot jet already for me at the dealer when I was having issues when I first bought the bike. I think they said they went to a 45 from a 42? But I don't think they changed anything with the main jet. Not sure what it should be to be honest. (size wize) All I know is they are talking 6-10 inches of snow the next couple days and I know I want to get out BAD! At least they are talking 60's by the end of next week. Oh, and I forgot to mention, it is a carb. 2006 1200C
Your elevation in MN should be in the 1000 feet above sea level range. I'd use a 45 Pilot jet and a 180 to 185 main jet forthe Screamin chicken a/c with slip ons. That should get you "pretty good". also drill out the plug on the Idle mixture plug (if the stealer hasn't done that already) and turn it all the way in till it's snug (but not tight) and back it out two and a half turns to start out with.
You aught to be well within range for dependable riding with that set-up.
If you are brave enough you can pop the top off and change needle to a 1988 Sportster needlefor a little more oomph (some like to drill the vacuum hole in the slide to 1/8" for a little extra throttle response.) But if you do this make sure to be really careful putting the top cap back on to ensure you don't damage the diaphram.
Here's a good "How To" link explaining thetop cap replacement procedure. http://www.mklsportster.com/xlcvarticle.htm
quig, damn straight. And they look nice too. BikerTrash,Sounds good. Thanks for the tips. I think I might just have to try it out. It's almost time for a new air cleaner anyways, so I might as well right?
I know about the pics. I am working on that. It's been a frickin blizard up here and my garage is not a good place to even think about taking pictures. I barely had the room to change the mufflers out. I will try to take some tomorrow (sat) and hopefully get some on here.
