My Sporty is due for an oil change, so I stopped by the dealer and I was quoted about $125.00 (yikes!!)
what is involved in doing the oil chage that would cost that much???
If I chose to do it myself what are the recommondations for the oil brand to use
shall I just buy the filter and oil (hd brand) from the dealer??
TIA for any advice
if they are other threads to this question please direct me to them
3 qts of 20w50 oil and a HD oil filter. Takes maybe 10 minutes to do. If you have at least 2500 miles I would use a good synthetic oil ( just me ). Very easy to do. If you like you can cut the filter and see whats trapped in the filter media. Amsoil and Mobil 1 are popular choices. Tim
Buy the HD service manual for your bike. It's about $50. You can change the fluids yourself without any problems plus long term the service manual will come in quite handy. I'd suggest using an HD filter and either Mobil 1 V-Twin or Amsoil 20W-50. I get the Mobil 1 at our Wallyworld for $7 a quart.
Leonel,
The main reason for the high price is the "stealer" will check your bike over. They check the tranny fluid, forks fluid and so forth. Do what oldgeezer suggested. Buy the service manual and do it yourself. The rewards of doing it yourself are fantastic. Good luck!
Nobody should be charging you $125 for an oil change, unless you ride a yamaha which in that case you have to take off the exhaust and possibly worse to access the oil filter.
I'm with everybody else. Get a manual and change the oil yourself. If you can't afford a manual yet, then I would be willing to scan the oil change pages for you. It will not take you longer than 10-20 minutes with the longest part having to warm up the bike.
Some tips:
Warm up the oil and let the bike idle upright without touching the throttle for a min. to scavenge the sump.
The manual says 3.6 quarts will fit, but that's not true. Only 2.6-3 quarts (3 most common) will fit.
Put a 2 liter soda can with the top cut off under the front of the bike by the oil filter to catch the oil that will drip out
from the oil filter.
Fill the oil filter partially to help build up oil pressure (optional).
it is the EASIEST thing to do - even easier than changing car oil - just follow the service manual - never spend that much ...thats absurd....and upgrade and use harley syn 20w50...8 bucks a quart about and a harley chrome filter and buy a wrench and you are still way under half of that quoted price originally
