I love my 06 1200, but I think its time to change the rear shocks. I've been watching what is said about the 412's and think I want to try them. I'm not looking to lower the rear, just get a better ride. What size should I consider? 12" seams to be what is stock, will going to 12.5 change the look? I'm a big guy 250lbs and I do ride 2up with my wife at times. Just want to improve the suspension.
Once I pick out the shock , It doesn't appear to be a big job to swap them. Can anyone give me a tip on changing the shocks, or is it pretty straight forward?
Thanks
Stew, I just put these 13.5 inchers on my 2007 1200C, the stockers were 11.75 inchers, I chose the Standards because of my 185 pound weigh. Over 225 requires the HDs. They make most bumps not noticeable and big ones soft. As you can see t I ground down one side of the outside washer because it almost touched the muffler. 13 inch shocks would not require this.
I rode this weekend with the wife (stock shocks) and the bike bottomed alot. If I go to the HD shocks will it beat the hell out of me while riding solo?
I have looked at a few of the other posts about the progressive shocks, I went to the progressive website also. I think to really get a better ride I'm going with the 812's HD. Does anyone have 812's on there bike? if so how is the ride? I know the 412's are better then stock but it seams like
(from what I have read) the improvement isn't a that big.
Stew, if I remember correctly one of our Buds here, (Folkie I think)said the 812s are 412s with a fancy cover. Maybe somebody will chime in and either nix that or verify it.
I just put on the 812's...no need to go with heavy duties IMO...I have them at setting three and could probably go down a notch. I don't ride two-up but do weigh 210..
Nice quality shocks...much bigger diameter than stock
I put standard 412s on my 1200R recently. Very comfortable on the middle setting. I weigh 240 with gear on, so you'd think I would use the HD springs, but this is just fine. I'm quite happy - it was quite an improvement over my previous two choices: rock-hard (too much preload) or way soft (preload lower but no damping). I got them from Eastern Performance - great folks, good price.
