It's not the gas cap, nor the primary chain. I did the 5000 mile service and took it out for a hard run at highway speed and about 15 minutes into the run the rattle started. If I compare it to some passed problems I'll had in a cage. I would say it sounded like a throwout bearing going bad. I'm going to look a little more before I have to take it to the dealer.

I had a similar bearing (without my service manual at work I don't ahve the bearing name) go bad, the bearing on the adjusting bolt for the transmission went bad. No noise, difficult shifting and had a ton of slack taken up in the cable. Once it started it was about a month of riding and adjusting the clutch before I tore open the case to find the problem.

Another thought: are the bolts on your exhaust tight? Mine loosten up and make a distinct rattle when decelerating. Exhaust is an item that changes drasticaly with temp changes, tight when cold can be loose when hot.

I took it to the dealer today. On the way there, I could hear it well enough to know it was coming from the area of the primary chain. First thing the service manager told me "those little 883s do make a lot of noise" This rattle just started about 500 miles ago. The tech took it for a test ride, came back and checked the primary chain adjustment and said it was too tight, adjusted it and test rode it again. They told me that the bike was fine and no charge. Same loud rattle on the way home. I'm running Rush 2" slipons, you would think you shouldn't have anything make noise over them.

First of all....I didn't touch his bike!!! LOL

I bet it's just the usual top end engine noise from a Sporty. Give me a call, if ya want me to give it a listen.

I had a loud rattling sound which I thought sounded like barbels in my tranny... Turned out to be my gas cap rattling.

My o/l's XL1200R had a clattering sound coming from under the primary cover which turned out to be caused by the nut on the front sprocket coming loose. Tightened the nut and used some red loctite on it and no more noise![sm=biker2.gif]

I carried it back to the dealer Saturday. They said they would get into Tuesday. They also said if it needed parts, they will have to be ordered. Just for kicks, I talked to them about trading it in on a 08 Dyna Lowrider. I gave $7100 for it back in Sept. and now have 4800 miles on it. They said they would give me $5200 for my trade-in. OUCH!
So the wait is on. I'm on vacation next week, so if I want to ride. I guess I'll have to rent one.

Thanks to all that replyed with info and help. I'll let you know it they repair it this time and what they found.

I called today to check on my bike. They said they just finished giving a bath and could come and pick it up. I asked want they found. They said they pulled the primary and didn't find anything. They wanted me to understand that those 883 are noisey. The damn thing sounds like it's going to fly apart just as soon as I get it up to highway speed. This just started a few hundred miles ago. This can't be right! I call another local dealer, they told me it would be at least a week before they could even look at it. I'm one pissed off white boy. I'm now sorry I ever bought the damn thing and at this point I don't have a clue what to do next.
