Default Please help a noob!!

Hello guys, I've been reading the forums awhile but never posted because I rode a Honda (shame), but now I own a 2005 Sportster XLH1200. Here's my issue:

I recently tried to replace my derby cover on a 2005 Sportster XLH1200. When I took the old one off all the primary fluid came out(of course I'm a dumbass who doesn't read directions). I bought a quart of new fluid from my local dealership and poured it all in. (Later finding out that there was a drain plug that I didn't pull.) Now when I shift down to 1'st when I stop the bike tries to pull forward even with the clutch fully squeezed. Also I can't shift up or down. When I release the clutch and pull it back in the problem goes away. Now my question is did I put too much primary fluid and not drain the old properly or did I unknowligly mess up the clutch adjustment? What can I do to fix this? Thanks in advance!!

It sounds like the clutch adjustment to me. If you have a service manual, follow the instructions for setting the adjustment.

For future reference, when you change primary/tranny fluid you can use the drain plug you mentioned then pull the small inspection cover to refill.

I am sure you over filled it. Let me guess....you removed the derby cover on the jiffy stand. Some fluid came out....you panicked and got the bike straight and you filled it up to the bottom of the cover with the bike straight? If I am right with the above scenerio then drain some out. Over filling causes all of the symptons you described. The correct level with bike straight is just up to the bottom of the clutch plate. You really have to look in and down to verify that.

Thanks for the reply.

The confusing part is that it never did this before. But I don't recall touching anything inside the casing. Just poured oil into the opening behind the derby cover. So even still you think it's a clutch adjustment and not possibly having too much primary fluid? I know jack about bikes, but it just seems weird that the issue never occured previously and has happened 3 times since my big goofup. I have no idea how to adjust the clutch though so it looks like i'll be spending money on that. GREAT!!!

Your welcome...PS You are better off going light with the fluid than too much as you now know. You now when you got the right amount when you see it just coming up to the bottom of the clutch.

Another way to fill properly is to drain it completly, and add exactly one quart.

You sure the Hex plate, spring and nut didn't drop out? Or maybe just the spring?

That's just what I was going to ask him...hope he hasn't throwned out the old oil yet... As he didn't say anything about having a problem getting these parts back in I'm sure he missed them...Bob

I never saw any parts fall out or springs. Nothing but oil and it was on a clean flat garage floor so I would have seen it. I checked it and sure enough, according to Mandog's filling instructions there was way too much. I drained until it was at the bottom of the clutch plate and then rode. I raode for about 20 minutes and it only happened again once so I need to drain a little more and then see. It started storming though so I will wait until tommorrow. After draining I will check it again.

You guys weren't there first to ask about springs though. I never saw a spring fall out,but didn't remember seeing one in there either. Though i wasn't looking for one. I mean the opening behind the derby cover ain't exactly big. I bought a new quart just incase. Do you guys think it's better to just drain it all and put the new quart in? Does it take a whole quart or less? If I still have problems I'll bring it back to the dealer and have the clutch looked at.
