No Baffels = Engine damage
Well this is what a couple people have told me. The HD dealership didnt say this specifically but they said I do want to get the baffels in ASAP.
The bike came with Samson Slasher exhaust with out the baffels in. I love the sound but other people in the complex I live in don't. I've ordered some baffels and they will be in next week but I just want to be sure that I'm not hurting the bike by driving in the mean time without baffels in.
The main reason for the baffels is not the people in the complex complaining because I really don't care what they think. I pay to live there just like they do and I don't complain about the dog **** everywhere that no one cleans up. Anyways, I want the baffels for the back pressure and I'm trying to get the bike running as good as possible.
MAIN QUESTION - Am I hurting the bike by driving it without the baffels in or will I be ok putting a couple hundred mile on it until next week?
Just personally speaking here, I'd recommend going with a set of baffles. Not only will the bike perform better, but it will prevent a great deal of possible "hiccups" that could cause problems when added up over a long period of time. I'm just saying this because my bike has 2" drags. When I got it, it sounded great and performed ok, but during my rebuild I noticed the exhaust valves were in pretty bad shape, and my pistons were kinda roughed up from detonation problems. I'd always tried to adjust the carb to prevent common annoyances with drags on either end (intake and exhaust sides), but somehow it always slipped by and still happened at some point, and quite frequently at that.
I think baffles are a good thing and should be used on street bikes, but again, I'm just giving my opinion and basing it on my experience here. Alot of people just want the sound, but I've actually noticed a BETTER sound with my Big City baffles than just running open drags. It's got a nice low, punchy, and steady note at any RPM and sounds mean as **** in between shifts

If your getting detonation and your mixture is right try looking at your timing and the advance curve. Does the bike"pink" as we call it under load and what compression you running, and what gas? I took 2 cylinders out on my old kwak drag bike due to thepickups on My dyna S ignitonfor pots 2 and 3 being slightly out but 1 and 4 was spot on.There more to pre ignition and detonation than mixture and back pressure.
