just curious guys n gals...since i'm currently garage-less, i'm going to store my bike under cover in my storage shed out back of my house. it locks, but it's not fort knox. i live in a decent neighborhood, but i'm sure my beautiful bike is going to attact attention...there just isn't no telling, ya know? my SUV has already been tampered with once, and fortunately my dog scared them away. well harley is installing the smart security system onto my bike before i pick her up (and also my rinehart crossbacks!! ) ...do you think that would be enough? from what i understand that just shuts down the engine or what not. what kind of security systems are most common with you guys? siren or disc lock or anchors orwhat?? bein' the military guy i am, i have what i like to call a mini arsenal and i wouldn't hesitate to peek the glock out my bedroom window (my bedroom window overlooks the shed) if a piercing siren wakes me. my dog, bless her heart,is pretty jumpy at night and stays on her toes, but i can't just count on her to keep my pride n joy (much less my INVESTMENT) safe from grimey thieves!
I'd say you worry too much. Most security measures other than perhaps a Lo-jack mean little if someone wants the bike (suppose you'r not home and they cut the siren. Something like this http://www.xenasecurity.com/home/current/lock/is far better a security sys./lock than what HD has and it prevents someone from just rolling the bike away while being an alarm and is difficult to get off or disarm unlike factory security. I don't have one and seldom worry (I have insurance)but I would buy one of the Xena locks.
You can add the pager/siren to your system from harley or you can add your own siren from radio shack for a price of $5.79 . Yes you read right. It's an easy do it yourself job, at least it was on my Ultra. It took me about 10 minutes to add. If you need the radio shack part number or instructions, just let me know but if you do a general search you will find them. I would assume you can install it just as easy on a sportster as my Ultra but don't hold me too it.
Depending on the size of the shed you would probably be fine with what you got. I keep mine in a public storage shed rental deal. I got the smallest shed they had (I can fit along with the bike and thats about it.) I just hit the fork lock. There's no way you can get that thing out with the forks locked. I also have one of the round padlocks. From what I hear, most people don't take the time to mess with them if they're breaking into a place.
I think the pager alarm is the best idea at night but if you leave it there during the day add a security dialer to your shed (Radio Shack has these and a magnetic contact) and have itdial your cell phone. Of course you would need to be within driving range to get there in time. Otherwise, set the phone number to dail your neighbor (if they still like you after you get your pipes on).
Oh, also put up a sign out front stating the premises are monitored by camera and electronic alarm system. You can even buy fake camares if you like for about $25, they even have a red light that works off a battery for several months.
