hey guys I just inherited my first harley its an 83 sportster the only problem it has is when i go to put it in gear it just grinds away.It sounded like something was rattling behind the cover also so I took the outer cover off where the clutch cable goes into but visually i dont see anything except the chain seemed to be a little loose but i really dont know much about the set up.Any help would be greatly appreciated

More info is needed but first thing I would do is check your primary since you said it looked lose. You need to check it from the inspection plate located further back. (about 2 inches by 3 inch plate). If you can move move your chain your than about half an inch on a cold engine....you got your problem. If it's grinding in first and not rattling than you got other problems.
hey guys I got a little more info for you guys its an 83 xlt1000
and it also looks like it has an automatic chain adjuster. I dont see any way to actually adjust the chain and i dont see any 2 inch plate.there wasnt much fluid in it when i took the outer case off.the clutch cable adjustment feels fine to me.Im gonna get some pics of it to post. gotta go to work for a bit
