I'd rather be riding backroads as well. There are some occasions though where I just wanna get somewhere quick or just feel like cruising so I'll take the interstate or main highway.
Back roads, twisties, anything on a single lane in each direction as opposed to the super slab. I just took a nice long trip that was quite a bit of super slab and it was fun in a different kind of way. Still would rather ride challenging roads any day. A softail is in between a sporty and a tourer, the best of both worlds.
How about both, long distance back roads. Just take a compass (now they have GPS) or look at the sun. When you get tired you can stop. When you get sleepy you can stop and sleep. The fun is in the ride and what you can see and discover with sight and smell. The eating & drinking part is also pretty damned good also (I might add). I suggest you repeat procedure until you 1) Have no money 2) Are dead My 2 coppers
I prefer the country roads that meander through farms, country, and small towns. When possible I avoid the slab because it is very boring to me. In fact, I even avoid the slab in my cage. Guess I would have preferred the roads prior to WWII when "Interstate Highway" wasn't even in our lexicon...
Mainly prefer the backroads, straight or twisty. A constant 65 or 70 on highway does get boring to me, but if in a group it is Ok.
Mostly, I just want to ride!!!
