Default First time mods

I hope to get a new 883L in the next few months and of course, I'm already thinking about mods.

First question is, what are the first few mods that everyone does to increase power a bit? What few mods would you do right away...what are those MUST HAVE mods?

Secondly, is it better to have the dealer do these mods right off the bat before I take delivery or should I wait and do them later?

Thanks for the info everyone!

I would have the dealer do a Stage-I mod right off the bat with Screaming Eagle II slip-on mufflers.

Cory,

I, too, am wondering about the same thing. I'm going to try a Stage I, myself -- thanks to the info on this forum. Also, check out this earlier topic at

Thanks for the info guys. I am no stranger to modding myself...I work on all my cars, so I'm not shy about doing that kind of stuff.
On the other hand, if I can get the dealer to throw in some mods with the bike or maybe get a discount worked into the deal, I might jump on that.

I understand that there might be warranty issues on a new bike if you don't have the dealership do the stage 1 and instead do it yourself.

yes, thanks for bringing that up, that's another question I had.

How cool are the Harley dealers with mods? I'm a Dodge car guy and some of the dealers are more leanient than others, but the cool ones basically tell you, if you put on a mod and it breaks or directly causes something else to break, then it's not covered. But if you put on an exhaust and your tranny goes out, then there's no way they can deny your warranty.

just wondering if it kind of worked the same way with HD.

I'm a Dodge guy too! Anyway, warranty can't be voided just because of Stage 1. I did all Stage 1 work myself and my dealer has no issues (believe me, I asked). And the Service Manual simply says that work be performed by a competent mechanic with the proper tools. Most Harley dealers are okay with mods (even selling the aftermarket parts to get it done), but at the same time some dealers will try and push work, even some you may not really need, for the business. It's somewhat the same as at the car dealers. If you ask at the Harley dealer and get, "I don't recommend that" - that's just them trying to get you to let them do the work (for $75/hr in my area - no thanks!)...

cool...what Dodge(s) do you have?

I have a pretty heavily modded SRT-4 right now. I've always had DC vehicles that I did work on...Had a lifted cherokee for a while and a lifted Wrangler for a while....the wife has had a neon, cherokee, and sebring...and now we are anxiously awaiting the Dodge Nitro for her next vehicle..and you can bet it will have a few mods thrown at it.

Thanks for the HD info too.
