I was in the Ft. Lauderdale stealership yesterday, and saw what appeared to be a nice custom replacement gas cap for my Sportster. \\; I asked the salesman if this was the whole cap, because the package seemed a little slim. \\; He assured me that it was, that the packaging made it look thinner than it was, and that it would fit my '08 1200 Low. \\; So I bought it. \\; Last night, I got home (Tampa) and opened the paqckage, and discovered that it is only the top part of the cap. \\; The underneath side is covered with several pieces of double-sided sponge tape. \\; There were no directions, but I guess I am supposed to just stick it on top of my existing cap. \\; If this is typical of Harley parts quality and dealer honesty I am VERY concerned. \\; I feel that this is a shoddy product and that the salesman flat lied to me. \\; [:@]
Sounds like you had an inept salesman. \\; I would drop a line to him or his manager and see what kind of response you get. \\; How was it packaged that you were unable to see that there were no threads on the bottom of it?
Probably just a bad salesman. \\; My local dealer has been very good to me. \\; HD does sell replacement gas caps, and they also sell adhesive parts that stick on your stock gas cap to give it a custom look. \\; Sounds like you got the sticky one.
Im sure he just didnt know what he was talking about as usual when it comes to dealership staff, but... come on, how stupid are you to believe him when you can see for yourself that the package could not possibly be thick enough to contain both the top chrome part AND the bottom screw in part?
 \\;
Inexperienced sales would be my guess, you see that everywhere now though. There are thousands of aftermarket parts available. Research alot, then research some more, then buy. Know all products even similar to what you are looking for the best you can, you obviously can't rely solely one one individual for all your advice, especially a salesman, hope that didn't offend anyone.
i agree with hotlap... granted, the clerk should have known his **** but it doesnt take a rocket surgeon to know a package 3/4 of an inch thick cant be a full gas cap... \\;
