I got a terrific 51 mpg yesterday - 3.1 gallons over 164.1 miles. \\; Normally I couldn't care less about my mileage, but at 4 bucks a gallon, every little bit counts. \\;
I am getting a wopping 36-38mpg right now!lol \\; I also only ride in town most of the time. \\; Before the short shots, Heavy Breather and the PC III I was getting around 45-48mpg with the same kind of riding. \\; I guess you give some and take some for looks, sound and performance.
I ride \\;74 miles to work and back with most of it being highway (65-70mph). \\; I average 47 - 51mpg. \\; The best I've ever gotten was also 53mpg. \\; The cost in fuel saved by riding my bike instead of driving my truck (at 19mpg) will cover the bike payment!
The wife just squeezed 60+ out of her 883 last weekend. I wouldn't have believed it had I not pumped the gas the night before and during the ride. \\; Sounds like you guys with the 1200's are doing good on gas.
My 2005 1200C averages right at 50 MPG, and that is with modified intake/exhaust, and higher performance Screamin' Eagle "E" cams which have more lift and duration, and flow more fuel mixture than your stock camshafts.
 \\;
But, I live in a very rural area, so I don't have to do any stop and go city riding like most. \\; I also ride my bikes in a conservative 'cruising mode', and don't feel the need to pretend like I'm on a high performance bike and do full throttle runs.
 \\;
The mileage you get depends on 3 factors\\; the state of tune of your bike, the area in which you ride (city vs highway), and your personal riding style.
