hey guys i have a 2008 nightster and want to change the handlebars out to the harley 12" matte black mini apes and my dealer is booked so i want to do the job myself. i was curious if i will need to change the cables or if there are any brand of mini apes that perhaps dont requre a change of cables. and if i do have to change the cables does anyone whoi has done this know wat size cables ill need for anything and any part numbers if you have that info. thank you for the help guys.
Harley lists the part numbers for the cables in the catalog. If you look in the back it has the lengths of the factory cables. You should be able to use those lengths and order them from anywhere or you can measure yourself. I am doing Apes from a 3rd party so my length is different. From what I have heard from others you can make the cables work. Some people were bending the tab on the brake line. I personally would be cautious and find something like the barnett cables or something less expensive than the factory but safer than trying to force a cable to work.
That being said I think several people are running stock cables and bending the bracket on the brake cable to get some extra length. I'm sure some one else will respond with some better info.
thank you for your help yea i was gonna wait till the bars came in and mesure the difference in length but id like to find a way to make it work with stock cables for now at least and worry bout fixing it over the winter. but im glad that there is a shot with the stock cables. yea ill have to get my hands on the catalog my dealer wont help em cuz they want me to do it from them.
Thanks for taking one for the mini-apes team reaper. I have the apes in hand but was told by my stealer they want 350-500 to put em on. Hope it works out for you
psssh lucky you mine said 800 i ordered the harley mini apes today cost me 60 bux so im hopin anyone who made stock cables work can give me a tip or if there are another set of bars out there that people used stock cables with. ill def let everyone knows how it goes and if i am able to use the stock cables ill tell how i did it.
Yeah surely someone will come around and let you know. I know a few people have them on xlforum.net . You might do a search on both sites and you should come across something.
