Hi, I have noticed a light spray of an oily substance appearing on the leading edge of the oil tank, with some over the top of the rear exhaust pipe. It appears to emanate from the air cleaner box?? A bit odd ??
It's not alot , but it's there after every ride, just a film over the surfaces.
I clean it off, ride about 50 miles, stop for a break and it's there again.
Any ideas??
Its an 06 883L, just had stage 1 and V&H shortshots put on, but to be honest, I think I noticed before that was done, but I thought I'd dropped a little oil from the stick when checking it, but now I know its happening during riding.
Hi WRAITH, can you elaborate on your answer please?

The crankcase is vented through a breather valve in the rocker boxes, any excess oil mist in the air that doesn't separate and drain back into the case gets sucked through the breather bolts that hold the AC backing plate on, back into the filtered side of the AC. In theory anyway. in practice, some of the oil mist leaks out all over your nice clean engine.
welcome to the sportster world...I ruined many pair of pants before running a hose from the breather to a small filter that drains down toward teh bottom of my motor. fixed the problem for me. There is nothing wrong with your engine...just one of the many little "quirks" that will come with the Harley experience...as you will hear many times..."it's normal"...
yeah sheit sucks i got it real bad and i dont ride over 65mph
let my bike sit in the garage for about two days and there is a but load sittin on the motor between the push rods i take off the air box wipe out all the excess and then its like once i get home there it is again all over the right side of my bike and a puddle collecting in my A/C. a guy at harley by my house told me that you could re-run that reather hose to the bottom of the bike but i woudnt do that cause with the amount that seems to be coming out, i would think that alot of it would end up on your back tire. but the way it is now it i actually getting on my belt so i dont know what to do. just my two cents
if you find a way to fix it lemme know thanks but i plan to get a FLHX in january
I run the hose from the breather passed the front cylinder and between the tubes of the front frame...then I attached the small filter to the frame with a zip tie through the hole in the cross piece just below the voltage regulator. Another short hose from the other side of the filter to the bottom of the motor. I get a little puddle everytime I park, but never any on the rear tire, or the bike. It works perfectly. I will take some pics and try to post them.
