Default "Fatster" value?

I have the chance to pick up a 1995 883 sportster that was customized to look like a fat boy, I inderstand this conversion was pretty popular in years past and I thing the bike is cool but it has some condition issues despite only having 700 original miles.

They include:

engine only firing on one cylinder (might be minor migh be major)

Key that ties the belt sprocket to the output shaft is sheared (don't ask)

dent on the front fender (the fat boy fender is too big anyway)

The bike is a sweet two-tone turquoise and white combo and a shows little age but can be easily brought back. The bike was well built with lots of polished pieces for an NBA coaches wife here in Northern California and was a first rate job.

The bike would be for my wife so the 883 doesn't bother me, if it did I can do the 1200 conversion for not much money myself or pay someone to do it, but with the condition issues I don't see the bike being worth more than maybe $3800. The 1995 883 books for $2000-$2500.

My question is this, do you think the custom work done to a sporty can be worth as much as the bike itself? I can have the bike as is for $5k but I'm pushing back on that. I've offered the owner the ful asking price provided the bike is running well, that the front cylinder is firing and the sprocket bolt is fixed...

Any opinions?

My question is what

If it's only got 700 miles and that many problems, don't bother. Sounds like someone abused the living **** out of it. You'll start with those problems and begin chasing others shortly afterwards....I'd pass, personally.

Well, it was abused... The lady that owned it trusted it to a boyfriend who owns a car dealership. He parked it in the shop and didn't lock the ignition, someone must have been practicing their launching skills or wheelie abilities to shear the sprocket key.

It's a first rate build but there are a lot of issues. I've seen a few very cherry fatsters for sale for 10-14k which seems really out there to me. My personal formula for personalized bikes is never pay more than the bike is worth for the upgrades, that is if a bike is worth $2000-2500 in this case the upgrades can't ever be worth $2000-$2500. In this case the condition issues are just too numerous to make the deal make sense.

That said it's still a 1995 sportster with 700 miles. I dunno. I told her I'd give her $3400 as is or $5000. if she makes all the repairs.

I got my 02 883 for $3500 last year in great running condition. I would look for something that is running good. The deals are out there ya just gotta look and be patient. And if you like the Fatboy mods, do them yourself.

700 miles and one bad cylinder and a sheared shaft? dude thats a major loser, pick up another 883 that runs well and convert it yourself! hell you can even make your money back on the new tank and fenders by selling the old stock parts on ebay.
