Warmed up the bike in the garage today to take advantage of the 60+ degree weather. I was going to ride to lunch.
Clutch in, drop it in gear, let out clutch.... nothing.
Speedo is showing 10+ mph, bike's not moving.
Clutch in, verify it's in 1st, clutch out... same thing. Nothing.
Look down and the belt is laying across the floor with a perfectly clean break in it.
I just checked alignment and tension a couple months ago when I got my new tires so I can't find any reason for the break.
I did a search and many others have reported the same thing, so I'm curious...
How many clean snaps with no apparent reason?
I took my bike out of the garage.I put all my gear on.(It was cold).I started the ride and it was fine.I sit down and look down and the belt is laying there. 16,000 miles.

I did however replace it myself.$175 for the belt
It looked like someone cut it with a knife.Very easy fix,as long as you have a lift and a book
Belt broke on my 05 1200 XLC on the way to work as I was approaching a stop sign last year on the way to work. Road had a small drop off (2 inches) between concrete sections. I figured bike might have flexed and belt developed slack, and snapped when it got tight again. Don't know...but only 8K miles on belt when it broke and bike is regularly serviced.
I'm on my third belt. First one was a clean break, put the bike in gear and it snapped. The tow cost me almost as much as the belt. The second one failed because traction sand and gravel got stuck in the belt (I ride year round).Cost me $600 to replace the rear pulley and belt.
Funny the timing of this thread. Mine broke last Saturday had to wait till Thursday to get the belt in and put it on Friday. It was really really easy to replace. Took me about 2 hours. I propped the bike up on some old books. One question though, do new belts ever squeek a little? Mine started doing that today, not the whole ride but I heard it. Everything is lined up and my belt twist to a 45 degree angle. Any ideas? By the way it was my fault that the belt broke.
