My '83 is belt drive and I have never broke a belt. I'm only on my second belt and I replaced it at around the 25-30000 mile mark, I forget, because I was nervous. I don't hole shot, pop wheelies or other stressers to the belt. I baby my bike as a rule.

I have broken two belts on my 05 1200C. The first happened at 5,000 miles. I was at a light, let out the clutch (slowly, not a rabbit start) and just sat there. The break had an S shape. There wasn't any missing area. The fibers on one part of the break had long threads like it was pulled apart. The other part of the thread was clean, like a cut.

The second break occured at 55,000 miles. This was straight across. I backed out of the garage. Let the clutch out slowly, and just sat there. This break was straight across. I ask the indy to look for signs of alignment, or damage to the sproket. They could find nothing.

Going on 30k... just over three years on the Sportster and on the original belt....

Though I would say I am easy on the bike... no hurry to go anywhere...

Well mine is not a sporty, but the drive belt snapped the same as if it was, but totally my fault. I was trying to show my stupidity and burn the back tire and instead the belt gave.
