Remove battery cover.
Remove wires from positive battery post.
Remove negative battery cable from where it fastens to motor case.
Slide out battery with negative cable attached.

Caution: If this procedure seems difficult or complicated put your tools away and find someone that's mechanically inclined to do the job for you.

Yeah...It's a right pain.....Is It just my bike that doesn't have enough free play on the cables to allow you to pull the battery out far enough to get a spanner on the cable fixing nuts?

Not sure of the year of your bike, but you should have a clear shot at the positive...the negative is another story. Follow the advice of cHarley...detach the negative from below and pull the cable through.

The ground cable attaches to the case behind the starter. Getting that nut off is a real pain - universal joint on a socket helps. Once that end of the cable is loose you can slide the battery part way out to take the positive cable off then pull it the rest of the way out.

the scariest thing is accidently touching the metal of the tool you are using to the frame while loosening or tightening the wrong post. ask me how I know! made me not touch my battery again for 8 months, im a wimp about batteries i spilled acid on my whole arm once, not fun.

got over my fear tonight, had to fix a loose cable with an all steel screwdriver and my fingernails.

I don't want to remove the battery, I want to install a permanent battery maintaince / charger. Would it be better to remove the battery, install the negative lead on the battery itself, re-install the negative battery lead, then re-install the battery?

That's the way I think is best and do it, but some here attach the negative lead to the frame.
