A recent owner of a used 2003 1200 sportster. It came with no engine guards. Is it a worth whilw investment or just personal preference? I seen bikes with and with out them. What are other peoples opinions?
Engine guards will protect your bike if you drop it. Most people will at some point drop their bike at parking lot speeds in the middle of a slow manouver, the engine guards will prevent expensive damage to paintwork and chrome and may prevent bent bars or broken levers. If you drop the bike at high speeds it will minimize the damage and will stop the bike from pinning you under it as it slides.
An engine guard is also a good place to attach highway pegs.
There are many good and valid reasons to use them. The most popular argument against them is that they don't look good, but that is a mattter of personal opinion.

That says it all... Myself wouldn't be without Engine Guards. Crash Bars whatever wish to call them .. Some think they take away the looks of a Bike personally I think they enhance the look while at the same time saving possible costly damage ..
They cost about $200, and will help protect your engine when some ******* knocks over your bike while you're inside. I would say it's worth it. I think they look good too.
im glad you started this thread im so wishy washy if iwant one or not. they are very practical i like the idea of highway pegs just not sure if i would like the looks on my scoot. looking forward to the replies on here and maybe some pictures
