Default zenith carb problem

I recently had trouble with my bike stalling after about 5 minutes of riding. It would idle fine all day, but as soon as I hit the road it would shortly die. I looked the carb over and discovered the rubber boot on the accelerator pump was hosed. I put a kit in and now after just a minute or so, the bike wants to over rev to the point of imminent explosion. The rubber was hard to get in and the pin attached to the rubber has no travel. Is it supposed to move up and down or did I get my hands on the wrong part? I hope i've explained well enough for someone to know what I'm talking about. Any help would be greatly appreciated. BTW, this is a zenith carb on a 1980 Ironhead 1000 cc.
