Default Exhaust Issue

I want to purchase Screaming Eagle slip on pipes, but my local dealerships states that I need to purchase a perfromance chip also or the bike will void it warrenty. The chip cost twice as much as the pipes. Question is: Do I really need the chip

No.......

There is no need to remap or install a fuel management system when installing slip-on's unless you are replaceing the A/C with a high flow unit.

As long as the intake air rate remains unchanged, the A/F ratio basically stays the same.

First, these bikes don't have "chips". They've got fuel management computers that adjust the air/fuel ratio based on pre-set factory settings. The "chip" your dealer is referring to is actually a fuel mgmt system such as a V&H Fuel Pak, DynoJet PCIII, SERT, etc. These systems allow for compensation in the fuel delivery systems when we tinker with our bikes; Ie. add custom exhausts and Air Cleaners, etc. For slip-ons alone, you can get away without adding fuel management and should have no problems whatsoever. However, as far as warranty claims go, I can't advise you as to what the dealer will say...Some don't care, others go by the book and will not budge. Hope this clears some of your questions up.

If you are going to purchase a set of Screamin Beagle Mufflers you DO NOT need to upgrade the computer.
If your dealer is telling you, you need a chip they are morons and I'd be moving on down the road.

Trust me on this..........

The very first item you want to add to your scooter is a Thundermax. It totally replaces your factory computer and 02 sensors. Yeah, it's 800 bucks, but from there on out you can make ANY changes you want whenever you want. The Thundermax 'learns' as you ride and corrects the fuel map automatically....It will also wake your bike up and allow you to challenge even a ricer.

I just installed one on my bagger and i'm totally impressed!...My sporty is NEXT!

But for now, like the other guys said, just SE slips will not harm anything....However, do NOT follow up with performance air cleaner unless you first install at least a PCIII. I would avoid the fuel pac completely.

First choice, thundermax, second, PCIII, last fuel pac.
