Default Rev Limiter

Hi guys I'm wondering if one you could give me a hand. I’m working on a 2000 Sportster Sport for a buddy and I’m wondering want the factory rev limiter is set at. The bike falls on its face at around 5500 rpm like its hitting the rev limiter but that seems to low to me. I’m thinking it’s a carburetion problem and not a rev limiter problem. He seems to think its hitting the rev limiter.

If it just noses over it is not the rev limiter.

Starts popping then you on the rev limiter.
5500 is about right for the limiter

If I remember correctly, the 2000 vintage Sportster had a rev limit of about 5400 rpm. Motor changes in 2004 allowed it to be increased to 6000 rpm.

On my Dyno think it showed my 04 dropping off at 5800 Charley but what the heck at WOT 6,000 sounds right to me ...

The pre 2004 Sporsters limiter was 5,400 while the 2004 and up is 6,200. In either case they will let you know when things start popping.

The rev limiter is actually the Ignition Module. You can buy after market ones that will increase the rev limit up too 7000rpm.I bought the Screamin Eagle version..It lets the engine rev to 6800rpm.I don't recommend 6800rpm,but it is nice knowing it is there if I want it.Part # 32979-98A. I also have seen them on Ebay. Here is 1 listing
