Just picked one up on ebay. The little sticker on the end says: Max capacity is 10lbs. What? Is this for real or is it just a CYA from Harley so nobody sues their **** when someone uses it as a seat? This thing has welds that could hold my whole house up. I know there is a danger having too much weight on the rear- but 10lbs?! Do they put the same sticker on a 2-up seat?!

Yeah, it has to be just to cover their a$$. Most quality leather luggage weighs 10lbs alone!
i am working on a little chinese 250cc sportbike and the stock luggage rack on the back says 5 pounds but its bolted on SO well and directly to the frame on multiple points that i know its very solid.
also the entire thing is machined from alluminium and impossibly strong.
its just a CYA dont worry about it
BUT if there is only a front and rear bolt on it, i would use a real wide washer underneath the fender and i would NOT load the sides too heavily, you risk bending the mounts.
if it doesnt look safe for sideways loads it probably isnt. if its a 4 point mounted rack you are fine
i am working on a project right now to turn one of these 4-point detachable racks into a passenger seat. It's not the construction of the rack, it's apparently where the mounting bolts attach to that's the problem. The threads that the four bolts bolt into are apparently just a nut tack welded on. I haven't taken the fender off to look, but if that's the case I am just going to go over the welds and maybe re-enforce it. You also have to check the sheer strength of the docking hardware because the rack may be solid, but put too much weight on it and the bolts could sheer off.
Well, I'm sorry, I really hate to break it to you, but if you put more than 15 lbs. on it, it will break in half. While it looks solid, and feels solid, it's actually quite fragile, so that in an accident, it will break away and not cause injury to the rider.
No, not really! I couldn't resist. It's the lawyers, trying to get HD off the hook before they get on the hook.
