Changed rear master cylinder - not a big deal...
When I had my bike in for a state inspection, the indy said the same thing - the brakes were operational, but they would never lock up the rear wheel. He said that several times in the past he ran into this problem and he found the rear master cylinder to be the problem.
So I ordered a new one from the dealer for $85. Tonight I pulled off the old master cylinder and put the new one on using the shop manual for guidance. I had the job completed in less than an hour and the results were positive.
I was able to bleed the brake by myself by reaching across behind the front wheel from the left side of the bike and using my left arm to actuate the brake pedal while working the bleeder with my right hand.
I took it for a quick ride in the 40ish temps (and winds) to try it out. The rear brake works much better now. Now it's back in the shed for some additional cleaning. I got caught in a downpour last weekend and the bike looks like it was dropped in a mud puddle!!!
I still have to polish the rocker covers and find the source of the tapping in the top end of the engine before the real riding weather arrives.
