1200n fun enough, fast enough, durable enough vs dyna bobs
I posted this question as a reply in a prior post but don't think it was read by many so I figure I'd start a new thread.
My wife will hardly ride, she doesn't care too much for motorcycles. If I get either the 1200n or bob. So, right now having a lot of room is not vital. What I want to get clear is if the 1200n can run all day or is it too much for long highway rides. Long rides will not be what I do most, but shorter 50-200 miles will be more about right. When I owned the VTX1300, it felt like I was in a cadillac, I felt very disconnected from the experience of riding a motorcycle. Coming from dirt bikes, at first when I moved to street bikes like sport bikes, they put me to sleep, constant buzzing, plastic everywhere on those bikes, it just didn't move me. SO, for me feeling like I'm on a bike rather than in a cadillac is important. And that is why I ask if the bigger twins like the fat/street bobs feel like you are more in a cadillac than a bike. To me that is boring zzzzzzzzzzzzzz! That is why I ask if the 1200n is more fun. And if the 1200n can handle long trips and not get left in the dust. My friend was trying to tell me to get a sport tourer, I rode one and it was boring as hell, might as well be driving my car some place. So, in a nut shell, 1200n can it run 70-80 mph not for just short trips but for those here and there long hauls? IS 80 mph on one close to redline and beating on it too much? Are they reliable? Are oil changes easy to do yourself? And is it more or less fun than dynas from the standpoint of pure fun, not comfort, I don't correlate comfort with fun. I have saved enough where I can buy either the 1200n or bob, I don't want to short change myself, but again, I don't want a bike that feels like a cadillac and puts me to sleep. I have a car for that. Thanks again.
yes , I think it will run all day. 50 to 200 miles once in a while would be ok .I have a nighter and on the highway the wind really beats you up around town it can't be beat.I don't use it for any 2 up riding if I did do any 2 up riding I think I would go with the Dyna.
Test drive or rent them. I have 2008 XL1200L. Nowhere near redlining at 85mph. 200 miles is no problem. I did this the first day I picked up the bike (break in period). Very good tourque at 3000 RPM's. Even in 5th gear.
Rode my 1200C 1300 miles from Texas to South Dakota in two days... 700 the first 600 the second. Had NO problems at all.. She will do the trip. sure I put on a windshield to keep the wind from killing me.. Saddlebags and a sissybar travel bag carrying all my gear for a 1 week stay. Bike had plenty in her... Went thru 6 states on that trip, I'm now planning on hitting the other 42 continental United States on her... BTW.. I'm 48yo.. Sporty will do what you want her to do..
I think the Nightster would be fine for what you are wanting to do. I rode my 2005 883C converted to a 1250 on a saddlesore 1000 ride which was 1000 miles in less than 24 hours and it did fine. I also took it on a ride through Atlanta Ga, Birmingham Ala, Myrtle beach SC and back to Portsmouth VA in 4 days with no problems. It did rev kinda high at 70mph on the highway (883 gearing) but still kept on truckin.
Having said that, I find my Street Bob just as much fun as my Sporty ever was.
