Old unvented caps used to be real pain in the.... groins. You would fill your tank, then the hot sun would cause the gas and vapors to start expanding. This caused gasoline to force it's way past the seals and seep out all over your tank, and crotch, if you were riding. Not a lot of fun. Vented caps allow those vapors to escape before it can push the gasoline up and out.
I like those flush mount with the led indicator built in. cost waaaayyy too much $$ though.....
Thats what I put on my bike this year. Well the other side of it. On another note, to the origional poster. Be careful with aftermarket caps, alot of them use a cheezy gasket to seal them, which is why my bike got repainted this year...And that vent tube in the filler neck limits you to gas caps, 99% of them unless specifically made for a sportster dont screw down...I solved that problem real fast with mine. You want vented also
Take the gas cap off and look inside the filler neck, you should see a 1/4"? tube sticking up in the neck that acts as an overflow/vent.
Which is the same tube i was talking about, which will most likely cause the cap not to fit. I tried many different brands before over the winter i went with plan C...
