My Bikes Puffin
im 14 and my dad had recently bought me a 2004 harley davidson sportster 1200 to learn on. It runs good and it handles nicely but everytime I start it the pipes start puffing dark smoke and after about 2 minutes it starts smelling like gas really bad... is the bike running to rich? how can i fix the problem? would rejetting help to rid the smoke?

Strong gas smell is normal because you are pulling the choke/enrichener out and making it run rich while it's cold. Is your air filter clean? A dirty and partially clogged air filter will make it run VERY rich. Next time you start it cold, pull the choke, hit the starter and as soon as it fires and runs smooth push the choke in slightly to keep it at 1000 rpm. About half way. If it's still puffing black smoke take the air cleaner cover off , pull the air filter off and see if it is still puffing. You don't really want to start it with the air cleaner off as it could backfire and burn you.

thanks you guys for all the replies and help.. im going to practice on it tomorrow so ill tell my dad to show me how to clean the air filter. My dad told me girls like harleys but no one ever told me that they LOVE them!!!!
