Default transmission problems

Hello All, I have a 1983 sportster 1000 w/ 4speed. I heard a slight noise and then a got a tight spot in neutral. I thought the chain was kinked or something so i put it on a jack to see where the sound was coming from. No luck there so i removed the chain and turned the front sprocket and every once in a while it would bind but come free after going back and forth . It goes down the road fine but, now iam worried it will lock up and dump me. Any ideas would be great! Thanks in Advance.

i would suggest that you do not ride anymore and pull the transmission. pull the sprocket off first so the shaft will come out with the rest of the unit. my first guess is the needle bearings on the counter shaft. these are oiled by a little trough that collects oil splash from the tranny gears. if you collect trash in the oiler hole or run short supply of tranny oil or over extend the maintenance of the tranny oil, these will suffer greatly. unfortunately, the rollers use the counter shaft as one of the races with a replaceable race in the tranny case. if the shaft is damaged, it can be turned in a lathe and over-size rollers used but there are limits as the shaft is not hardened through out. might have to buy another one, which you might be ahead doing that. there are other ball bearing and needle bearings that should be inspected/replaced also. one very important point not to over look in replacing the counter shaft bearings is the position of the washers. one outside next to the snap ring and one on the inside with the rollers in between. you can hold the rollers in place with grease so that you can insert the shaft through them.
