I guess it is the day for exhaust questions. I just bought the cycle shack slipon for my 05 sporty and I know this question has been answered before but cant remember . How hard is it to remove the stock mufflers and pu the new ones on. Also what about rejetting Dealer says it needs done board says not if just changing mufflers. Who is right. Dealer also says it will chang my performance for the worst .What mpg or what
I just put the SE II slip ons on my 1200R and did not re-jet. No difference in performance. Still carb farts when cold. After shes warmed up good no carb farts. I love the bike, just have to get to know her. I am going to do the air cleaner and jet it in a week or so. I hope that helps.
It took me 1/2 hour to get the old off and the new on. front one was a pain in the as#, there is enough play in the headers that you do not have to loosen the manifold bolts, but be carefull when pulling the old ones off. Nice and easy, dont rip em off, you could do some damage.
I posted this same question last week, and I am now passing the info I got from some very nice folks here on.
I suggest that you remove the exhaust from the heads before trying to pull the mufflers off. If you leave them on, you risk damage when you pull on the mufflers. They do not come off easy and the last thing you need is a broken exhaust stud or bent flange. Also, you can get better leverage on the mufflers if you can put the primaries on a workbench.
The stock jetting in sportys is lean because of the EPA regulations. My opinion is that the carb needs to be adjusted (not necessarally rejetted) even without modifications. Drilling out the plug and accessing the air/fuel mixture screw to richen the mixture is just a good idea and will make your motor happy. Once you add the mufflers, you may need to add a larger primary jet. When the mixture is richened, your bike will run better (no more carb farts) and performance will increase. Your MPG may even increase because the motor isn't working as hard to do the same job (efficiency).
I put on the Cycle Shack Tappereds on and then swapped out for the SE II's (am now back to stock because the noise with both at my normal cruise of 55 had a harmonic sound that drove my ears nuts!). Anyway, I was able to remove the slip-ons easily without removing the headers. I sprayed WD-40 after loosening the clamps where the slip-ons join the headers, walked away for 30 minutes, and then they easily slipped right off. My 2005 XL1200R ran great with both the Cycle Shacks and SE II's without rejetting.
