I was coming back from a weekend trip this morning. I saw something in the road about 400 or so yards in front of me. I figured it was a deer, usually is. I started to slow down, pulled in the clutch and coasted to within about 50 yards before it looked at me. I kept coasting to about 20 yards (was only doing about 15 mph at this point) and revved the engine. That bear jumped straight in the air, its legs were running flat out hanging there. As soon as it hit the ground it was moving like the worlds biggest, meanest metal grizzly bear was after it.
I've seen lots of deer but never a bear, until today. Just before I revved the engine I thought "bears eat people sometimes don't they". Not today I guess.

Reason: Can't spell...
Last spring I was riding some county roads about 60 miles outside of New York City, foothills, not mountains and not real country. There were homes on both sides of the street on 1 to 4 acre lots. A bear ran across the road in front of me about 35 yards out. This was mid-afternoon. I'd seen bears up in the Catskills but only at night and around dumpsters. Pretty cool. I guess their natural environment is getting badly compromised by development and a loss of food.
Coming from Utah, probably a black bear. We have lot's of those around here; I haven't heard of any grizzly's down our way yet. When the black bears are shedding for the summer they kinda have a brown color.
