my first harley

I just bought a new 09 883. when i first start it, and rev it up a bit it blows black smoke for a minute or two. is this normal?

Bit of fuel smoke on the warm up cycle.

However I don't like the idea of revving a cold engine, especially if its not run in.

Don't rev the engine when you are first starting the bike. You shouldn't have to throttle it at all at start up. I could be wrong in saying this and it might not hurt a thing. When i first start up my bike and have to take off right away for the first few miles i always take it easy. How many miles do you have on the bike? What mods if any have you done? A stock bike shouldn't be blowing black smoke. It should be running lean on the fuel.

Yeah your bike has FI and there is no need to rev the bike-plus reving a cold engine is never a good idea. Like was said the smoke is fuel smoke since the PCM is making the mixture fat for cold start up and warm up.
