The crank position sensor tells the ECM where the crank is so the ECM can fire the plugs at the right time, if it fails the ECM thinks the crank is not rotating so no spark, it is located at the front of the motor beside the oil filter.
I agree with cHarley about the trouble codes, check them first, if there is more than one stored clear them and check them again after it does it again.

You can't. Short of maybe HD plugging in their diagnostic computer you are SOL when it comes to getting the DTC's if you don't have a speedo.

I think the CPS is pretty cheap and if yours leaks anyway I'd change that and see what happens.
cHarley, did you have similar symptoms when yours went?

Yep, but the symptoms were varied each time (3 times). They aren't cheap ~$50.00 a pop and non returnable.

These sensors have a history of failing and it seems to be related to heat. I have installed a C clip on the mounting screw under the sensor to give the sensor about a .010" standoff and it seems to have improved the situation. I'm thinking these sensors really need some form of a heat sink, as these issues keep cropping up in the summer months. I'm seeing this problem mentioned on other HD forums as well.

Heat does have alot to do with them. Heat makes the plastic brittle and causes cracks, thus causing it to lose contact, but shrinks back up when cooled down making contact.

I have never seen the pickup housing crack, but they do seem to fail (throw dtc codes) when the motor gets really warm in the summer months. I've got 3 sensors on the work bench that look and test fine, but they all throw DTC codes P0373 once the motor gets up to 200+* (oil temp) and you push for over 90 MPH in 4th or 5th gear.

I am willing to bet that if you look, you will find hairline cracks in that cps.
