I use a gun cable lock. they are armor coated so they wont scratch your bars or whatever you lock it to. cheap around 6 dollars at Cabela's or on eBay.
The only other I would like is the one that attaches to your licence plate.
I own both a 1999 XL883 and a 1977 XLCR and I use a long shanked padlock for the front fork lock for each of these bikes. All I have to do is put the D rings of the helmet over the shank after the lock is on the forks and I can lock the helmet to the bike when I lock up the forks. Simple!

If you have a sissy bar I mounted mine like this because the one Harley sells for Sportsters will only fit on the handle bar. I certainjly didn't want it there. I drilled and tapped the side plate and placed Nylock Nuts on the inside.
