Default Sound

I just bought a 06 XL1200 Custom sporters. Iwas wondering what would be the cheapest way to get a better sound out of my bike other than the stock sound it has now?

funny you bring this up. I just spent the last month looking for the same answer. With the year bike you have you will have a cat in the front muffler. Either buy a used set of muff's off of a someone/where and cut the baffles out(really easy) or buy a cgeap set of slipons. I got my buddy to grab me front muff off an 05 sportry he worked on the other day and got the baffle out and boy am i lovin the sound. Was thinkin about gettin jug huggers but not sure how they sound and for now i am VERY sattisfied.

I was on a Poker Run yesterday, and out of all the bikes there probably 150+ were Harley's in one form or another.

We compared "exhaust tone" on a bunch of them, and I'd hate to imagine how many aftermarket pipe combinations were installed on various bikes.

A lot of the guys were surprised with the tone of my '05 1200C. Very deep sounding, and it has a nice "bark" during hard acceleration. Not tinny sounding like many of the exhaust systems.

All we did with my stock pipes was to open them up by removing (not just drilling) the mufflers/restrictions. Right now they are open pipes, but we did leave the crossover pipe in place to balance out the exhaust flow.

After comparing them with other bikes yesterday I'm keeping them, heck with the aftermarket stuff. The "open" stock pipes perform just as well and sound better than most aftermarket systems, so there isn't point on spending $400 to $600 for something else.

I'd say either a pair of aftermarket slip-on's or drilling out the baffles in the stock pipes. I wanted to keep my crossover in place so I went with Vance & Hines slip-ons. Also wanted a straight pipe look vs the stock tapered look. Good luck....

OldFenderGuy & Warrior

Looking at your pictures, I don't see a crossover pipe. Are the newer bikes different? I have an older one.

04 and up have a cross over. its behind the exhaust. i think one of the best/cheapest sounds you can get is to take out the baffles. Like said earlier dont drill them to get the sounds take them completley out.

Cheapest would be drill out the baffles. Dealers call this de-buring!
