I can't believe I'm saying this.... short shots too loud, baffle solution?
ok, so i've had my nightster since june, I bought it used with short shots. I loved the way they sounded at first, but they are LOUD. From what others have said I'm not sure if they've been modified or not. They're louder than my friend's thunderheader 2 into 1 by a good bit.
I wear a biltwell helmet which is the best sound insulating helmet I have, even compared to the full face ones. But when I start it without my helmet on, DAMN!!!!!
The cops in SF are starting to crack down big time. I went on a ride last weekend and 3 guys I spoke to said they'd gotten tickets in the last week or two and my pipes are way louder than theirs.
Can you buy quieter baffles, or is there another fix? I'm not trying to make it much quieter, but in line with average harley pipes out there. I like loud, but at this rate I'm sure to get stopped so I need to tone it down just a bit. Then I suppose I'll need to retune as well, right?
Just read in the August 09 issue of American Cycle Mag an article on this very same problem
The article shows how to add the "Hard Kore Baffles" from Smartpartz to tone down the Short Shots.
It uses common hand tools to do the install.

Do you still have the stock exhaust. If not start looking at Eaby. You may need it.I have been buying up stock exhaust from there because of noise ordinances.Bet I get more than I paid for them.Just the shields are over 300 at the dealer.Good luck my stockers are tucked away for such an occurance.Pa does whatever Ca. does.Did it with emissions already.
IF you are looking for other ideas, I was going to go with the short shots but the dealer talked me out of them because of the police giving others a hard time I went with the Rush Slash Down Slip ons and I love them, then if you decide you need to change the baffle you can for just $75 for the set.
The quiet baffles make only a tiny differance in the sound, you bought a set of glorified straight pipes, if you don't like them dump them on EBAY and then put your stock head pipes back on with a real set of mufflers, like Rush, D&D,S&S or Cycleshacks.
Not only will it sound better it will run better.
Ahhhhh I guess Vermont isn't such a bad place for loud bikes after all! I have the short shots on my nightster and the cops here don't even bat an eye at me! I love it! Loud pipes save lives!!!!
[quote=eviltwin415;5642928]Hey Daytona, what baffles did you use? how much? could any moron install them? meaning me. did you have to retune?
i used the vh quiet baffles, paid like 60 i think for new ones. no retune, runs fine. if you have the right tools and some common sense, anyone could do it. just take off the heat shields w/pipes still attached, and swap out. i couldn't go back to stock, since i was scrapin the stock pipes were scrapin the ground, too dangerous. i ride a sport bike too, so i'm use to leaning the bike hard. good luck on finding your combo.
