Default Night Train it out?

I have a 05 883c. And it came with the factory gray engine covers all around. I dont really have enough money laying around to chrome it all out. added up its around 1500 bucks or so with gaskets and fluids. I know i could buy a little at a time, but come to think of it everyone and i mean EVERYONE has chromed out there sportster. Dont blame them it looks good i like it too. But i thought why not try something new? The best ideas come across when someone staggers from the norm. So I was wondering how everyone thought it would work if i got good black paint, and blacked out all my gray areas? Make it look like a cross between a sportster and a night train. Please add any ideas or comments. Dumb idea? Leave it alone? Worth a try? I dont want to have to spend hours cleaning the chrome on my bike before i ride.

I have been thinking the same thing. If you do go ahead and do it let me know what paint you use.

I think you could get your best results if you had the parts powdercoated. It would last longer and stay even from the engine heat. Or you could get your grey allumium covers polished out which i think Billet Allumium or just a high polished Allumium looks better then chrome but takes up alot of time to keep it shining. Polished out mine even though they were already but cleaned them up more, check my gallery.

My thought on this is 1st what about when you go to trade in or sell it? 2nd do you think you can get a paint that will hold up to the heat of the engine? I think a wrinkle type paint would look good if there is something like that available for heat. and lastly to do a good job it's going to take a lot of disassembly in order to get into all the places. Do I think it would look good.............yes if it's done right, would I do it if it were mine............probably not. I like your bike now the color combo is nice. Whatever you decide good luck, if you git-r-done post some pics of the results. Just my overall 2¢.

That was my original intent when I bought my 883. Everyone I seeked advice from said that paint sticking would be an issue - and therefore a hassle that I didn't want to deal with. But heck, Harley sells that silver-gray engine paint, so I don't see why a black high temp paint wouldn't work. Go for it man, you just might inspire me. (My wife will hate you )

This is my own opersonal opinion, but I think that some people go overboard with too much chrome and / or overboard with too much black. That being said, I really like the way the Night Train looks.
Lately, I've seen a trend where a lot of people are "blacking-out" their Sportys.
Again, IMO, and it's probably the old man in me talking, but I feel that it my be more of a popular thing right now and may - I say may, not be so popular in a couple years.
But it is all a matter of taste and what you like for your bike. If you dig it - DO IT!

Now getting back to the subject, I say powdercoat everything you want black. It is a ton more durable and will hold up well over the long haul. Powdercoating is relatively inexpensive. I had a bunch of chrome on my bike when I first got it. I had most of it powdercoated gloss black. Recently my bike went through a ton of changes. I designed the look to my taste and stayed with, what I feel is a classic look, Black & Chrome. IMO, there is an invisible line that I didn't want to cross that gives me the "right amount" of balance.

I think it turned out OK.

Good Luck in your quest to personalize your bike. Look at as many pics as you can and come up with what works for you.

The grey covers on there now come powdercoated already so it would be hard to polish them.

I noticed the chrome covers are much cheaper than the actual chrome components. Do they look good? Anybody out there have chrome covers with pictures?

MIdwestXL.....it looks like the risers on your bars are straight up in line with the forks. It that a bar and riser set or something you set up. I have on 04 1200 and the riser pulls back. I have bars from a DWG, like mini apes and the straight riser would give a better look I think. Did you also change the front wheel? VERY nice looking ride....like the powder coated lower tubes.

After asking my question yesterday today at a bike show i found a bike that had blacked the engine out that wasn't a night train. He ever was able to buy a can, or had it sent off. But it was harley factory color matching paint. It looks nice, i didn't stay to see if he won or not. But it turned out really well. So i'll be asking my harley dealor about it and see where it goes. The paint and what now might end up costing as much as chrome and id be too scared of any high temp paint that i buy to flake.
