I like having the engine guard on my 883C. I've gotten accustomed to the look over the last year. Also last winter I picked up some Desert Dawgs and use them (they mount over the guards) when it's cold to reduce the wind chill. And I remember once (pre-Sportster days) when I turned off my bike, had a brain-f@rt, forgot to put down the kickstand and got off the bike - I sure wished I had engine guards that day...
I agree a Sporty looks better without the "crash bars". However, when I hit the front break in a slow sharp turn (Stupid, stupid, stupid) the barssaved my left mirror and clutch..
Mine??? I don't know if it is harley or not. I bought it used and didn't ask. I lowered it a little over an inch from where it was made to rest, bymodifying the upper mount, which makes it look better IMO.
I am getting a new 07 soon and was looking at the linbar, very sharp if you want an engine guard. So I went to the link you posted to look at the prices. I think you should read what it said in the installation instructions.

They all say that... It is for legal purposes. I have seen crashbars save people's legs time and time again in low speed layovers. Not to mention their paint.

Yea, mine says it right on the bar.
That's why none of them are actually called "crash bars," but "engine guards." Lindby Customs also calls theirs an "engine guard."
They put the disclaimer on them for legal reasons, so some lawyer in this litigious country can't sue them when somebody crashes at 80 mph and blames his engine guard for his leg injuries.
I have never seen any bike engine guard ever make the claim that it would protect someone in a crash. They're simply there to protect the bike somewhat if it falls over at a standstill. What makes the Linbar unique is their apparently patented built-in highway peg design, as well as its sleekness.
